The challenge was to create a new brand identity for a restaurant that celebrates the art of grilling and baking, inspired by everywhere from Moorish Spain and the tip of Morocco to the Barbary Coast and along to Jerusalem. The result is a simple design that celebrates the restaurant’s unpretentious, fantastic tasting food.
We started by researching extensively to understand everything we could about the Barbary Coast in particular from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. This led us to create a quirky word marque with plenty of character, inspired by the golden age of piracy and purposefully free of conventional Middle Eastern cues. The now extinct North African Barbary lion became an obvious icon for the brand. Simple typography and rich colours gave the identity timeless depth and warmth.
